Pam’s Down Under Adventure
Started my trip in Honolulu, HI on a 9 hour flight to Aukland, New Zealand. Flight was smooth and uneventful. Discovered a new fave show – Hacks. Unfortunately because I am outside the US, I haven’t been able to download all the seasons. Tough life? lol

Night 1 – Aukland, New Zealand
Made it through customs in about an hour. Not too bad despite the lines and having to go through several interviews/inspections due to everything I had to declare. They are super strict here and I wasn’t going to take any chances! Also, I am traveling with 2 suitcases. Oy. One is super heavy and the other can be a carry on if needed. I hate that I needed 2 suitcases as I think one of my Airbnbs is a walk up to the 2nd floor. I’ll cross that bridge when I get there! Good thing I am allowed up to 70lbs in each bag on Air New Zealand! It may be problematic when I fly Virgin Australia though while I travel within Australia.
Took an uber to my hotel in downtown Aukland – the JW Marriott. Really nice hotel and very reasonable compared to US prices. Only $150! Especially loved how comfortable the bed was and how cold the room got.
Made it to my 8pm dinner reservation at Amano. Read about the place on Google Maps. It was really good! My only negative is how leisurely the dinner was. Took over a half hour to officially order a drink. It was worth it though! The cocktail was dangerously delicious! Waiter was super helpful to ensure my drink had no spice in it despite the chili ingredients noted on the menu. After I ordered my meal – homemade pappardelle with local lamb ragout – I only had to wait about 10 minutes to be served. It was really yummy! I walked back to the hotel around 9:30pm. Super glad I brought my North Face jacket! It was really chilly – like in the 50’s.
The walk to and from the restaurant was pleasant. Saw some people in costume as it was Halloween. I thought it would be busier outside but maybe the central business district isn’t hopping at night 🤷🏼♀️ Regardless of the city not being crowded I felt safe. Just had to be mindful of the cars since they drive on the other side of the road. Same with the pedestrians.
Once back at the hotel I showered, chilled out and was asleep a little after midnight. I’d say it was a successful first day!
