On The Road Once Again | Destination Cairns
One last major leg of my Aussie road trip to go! This time I’m heading to Cairns. It’s 7 hours away without stopping. Big day.
I was super tired from yesterday’s adventures and slept 10 hours. I was still tired when the alarm went off at 8:30. But check out was at 10 and I still needed to pack.
I was on the road by 10. Didn’t have time for breakfast at the hotel/apartment so I stopped just outside of Airlie Beach at Whitsunday Gold Coffee. Had a delicious breakfast of fried eggs with bacon over sour dough toast and some hash browns plus an unbelievably good latte.
Then it was time to cover some serious kilometers. Drove for another 3 hours or so to a place called Townsville City. I had read about a Greek restaurant that seemed good for lunch. It was! Had a lamb souvlaki wrap. After lunch I had about 4 hours and 20 minutes left.
This drive had a lot more 18+ wheelers on the road and more cars in general. It must not be a thing to speed here because everyone was either going the speed limit or below! It was really frustrating at times because I just wanted to get there! And it was still a 2 lane highway so opportunities to pass were spaced out. Apparently I’m the only one who drove fast. Go figure. Just like everywhere else! And unless I got tagged by a speed camera, there were no police. Also the surroundings changed a bit from just the green rolling hills and cattle and sugar cane farms to being in the hills. Plus as I got closer to Cairns I saw a lot of banana and mango trees. The banana trees reminded me of Uganda.
Unfortunately because I stopped a few times for gas and bio breaks, I arrived in Cairns around 7:15pm. And it was already dark. The Airbnb check in instructions were complicated imo. I had a really hard time finding the parking spot. But I did it eventually. The Airbnb is in a relatively large apartment building. My unit has 3 lanais but it was too dark to take in the views. Apparently I can see the ocean as I am around the corner from it and the esplanade. I tracked down a pizza place for dinner. The 12 minute walk over was a good way to see some of the town. I walked past a lot of shops and restaurants plus the esplanade which has a huge public pool (that people were still using at 8pm). I get it though. It’s soooo humid here!!! Omg. 80% humidity according to the weather app it certainly doesn’t feel as cool at the 78 degrees stated. I’m praying I don’t come across any big bugs or bugs in general but it is the tropics.
Just had 2 slices of a margarita pizza. It was really good however it was thin so eating it properly (by folding it) was difficult. Going to grab some water and essentials and head back to the Airbnb. I have to leave at 6:30 tomorrow morning to catch the snorkeling trip out of Port Douglas. Can’t wait!
