Last Licks in Cairns | Departure Day

The day started at about 8am. I thought I slept well but my sleep apps disagree 🤷🏼‍♀️ I did wake up to messages from coworkers who were impacted by the layoffs. Really sucks. Two of my 3 Verizon colleagues got the axe. Super sad for them.

But I had to switch gears and get my shit together because check out is at 10. And the Airbnb hosts are strict about leaving by then. So I finished packing and despite trying to make my suitcase lighter so I could avoid excess weight baggage fees, my big suitcase still weighed over at 29kg (limit is 23kg). Oh well. I’ll deal with it at the airport.

I found a breakfast place on Google Maps that was near my Airbnb. It was a good call! I had scrambled eggs on toast with a hash brown. The food was decent it the fresh squeezed orange juice was insanely good!! So was the latte.

After breakfast I made my way to the botanical garden in Cairns. It was very tropical I definitely liked the garden in Brisbane more than the Cairns one wasn’t very big and was just tropical plants and trees as opposed to having them from different regions like most botanical gardens do. But I still enjoyed it. Once I saw everything I still had about 2 hours to kill before going to the airport. I asked ChatGPT for recommendations but most I had already done. So I went back to the central business district – over by the ocean and esplanade – and found a place for lunch. I splurged and had some popcorn chicken and Mac and cheese balls. Soooo good!! And then it was time to depart. I was ready. I did get a $100 parking ticket however. But I have proof that I paid via the app so I sent a message to the Council. I hope it can be resolved quickly.

I got to the airport relatively directly. Took me a minute to find the rental car return. That will be the last time I think for a while that I drive on the left side. Just as I was getting used to it! The good news is the rental car place didn’t notice that I sorta messed up the corner of the car when I backed the car at the garage in Brisbane 🙏🏼.

The airport was a breeze! I got to use the priority line to check in. And the woman didn’t blink when she saw my overweight bag! She just put it through and I didn’t have to pay extra! Woo hoo! And security was also a breeze. No line! It’s a really small airport. They don’t even have a lounge for Virgin Australia. I had to sit with the riff raff hahaha.

The flight to Sydney was a little delayed but only by a few minutes. Unfortunately I am sitting in a full row. Makes no sense that the row in front of me has 1 person when mine has 3.
