Museum Day | Perth Day 5
Can’t believe day 5 is over! Had a really nice day. Went to the Western Australia Museum and it was fascinating! I learned a lot about this part of Australia. The museum focused on everything from the effects of climate change – especially human caused – to all about the animals both in and out of the water that live or have lived here to different groups of people who migrated to Western Australia (including the Jews from WW2) to the sports and technology innovations. I was impressed. Plus the museum was relatively empty so it made it easier to see everything at my slow pace. They had 2 docents who approached me and shared some info too. I was in the wildlife section and one of the docents asked if I wanted to see some skins. I was standing by the snakes and that is what I did thought she was referring to – snake skins! I said no thank you! And they actually had a live snake in one of the displays. That was the only living animal there. Kinda random. Everything else was taxidermied.
After the museum I went to the Perth Institute for Contemporary Arts (PICA). Nothing like I expected. It was weird. They had an exhibit that I struggle to describe. One huge room had 3 large TVs showing a picture of a flower. There were Polaroids along the wall of cars and homes. I don’t get it. And then there was a stack of bricks with 1000 large envelopes on it. Huh? I was invited to come back to the gallery for a movie showing and reception with the artist but I didn’t feel like hanging around for 1.5 hours and I had a dinner reservation.
Went to this Italian (of course) restaurant on the water in Elizabeth Quays. Took a nice walk around the Hay Street mall on my way plus the harbor. The restaurant was called Simple and it was pretty good. The wait staff wasn’t very friendly but the food was good. I had beef arancini and homemade fettuccine with a meat ragout. The pasta was super fresh and I had enough to take home for dinner tomorrow.
Got back to the Airbnb around 6:30. I was glad to be back so I could shower, do some laundry and chillax. Off to Fremantle tomorrow!
