A Rainy Day in Brisbane | Day 2

I had been watching the weather and knew it wasn’t looking promising – rain was in the forecast. I decided to proceed with my plans of exploring anyway. At least it was still in the high seventies/low eighties and just a little windy. So I grabbed my umbrella and set off for the day later in the morning. My plans were to catch a series of buses to Queensland University so I can catch the ferry/City Cat from the start of its route. It was definitely an exploration! I walked in circles just trying to find the bus stop. Google Maps made it look like the bus stop was on the opposite side of a 5 lane road that didn’t have a convenient cross walk. So I actually walked right past the bus stop and walked a lot further than I had to. Once I figured out where the bus stop was, it made a lot of sense. Because the cars drive on the left, of course the bus door would be on the left side of the bus and therefore the pickup would be on the left side of the street. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ So I got the first bus and managed to get off at the correct stop. I was a bit lost though at first and couldn’t figure out where I catch the connecting bus. It was in an actual bus station-not on the street. Before I ventured down to the bus station I couldn’t help notice a Wendy’s fast food restaurant. It was packed! Granted it was lunch time but I hadn’t expected it to be so popular here.

Anyway found the second bus and waited less than 10 minutes. The bus was sort of a cool way to see things although the second bus was mostly on highways. But the university stop was really pretty. It was at a park only steps from the Brisbane River. They call the river the snake because of how it snakes through the entire city.

Fortunately the ferry was pulling up as I got there. It was rainy so I had to sit inside but because I was at the start of the route, it was relatively empty and I got a window seat. I forgot to take a pic of the ferry but they aren’t that big. Maybe 10-15 rows of seats. 3 sections of seats/2 aisles with each section having 4 seats. Like an airplane kinda. And they have an announcer/crew member that stands at a podium in the middle and announces stops. The lady doing that was a trip! She kept giving shout outs to people on the boat. I guess people told her names and what not and she would announce them on the speaker and end each announcement with “and lots of love from the City Cat Crew”. The little kids enjoyed hearing their names. And then she would say something like “okay gorgeous women and gents, this is X stop and have a wonderful day”. She was a trip! Maybe you had to be there.

The ferry costs 50 cents a ride so it’s a fantastic way to see the city. We passed by GORGEOUS homes along the water. Must be nice to have a pool, a view, your own dock and boat!

I was on the ferry for about an hour or so and was super hungry. I found a highly rated Greek restaurant in the Tenerife neighborhood that was open until 3pm. I got to the Tenerife terminal at about 2:15pm and walked the half mile in the rain to the restaurant. It was totally worth it! Lunch was insanely good! I had lamb skewers that came with a delicious salad and fries and tzatziki sauce. I could barely eat half of it so I took the rest home although I don’t think it will all heat up well.

I thought about taking an Uber/Didi back to the Airbnb but decided to take the bus instead. Once again I walked in the wrong direction and was heading towards the ferry rather than the bus stop. So I took the ferry a few stops to my location at Howard Smith Wharves. It worked out perfectly because I had read about all the restaurants and bars there. It’s this cool area at the foot of the Story Bridge. There is a beer hall and some other restaurants, bars and a hotel. It’s a whole scene down there. Even on a rainy Sunday afternoon! I was surprised but I had also heard Australians like their beer. And my Airbnb is only a 2 minute walk from the wharves so that was great as well.

I was pretty much done at that point. The rain was no bueno. I went back to the Airbnb and settled in for a bit. Thought I might grab dinner but didn’t feel like going back out in the rain. I ordered in some pizza instead with Uber Eats. The place was called Sal’s NY Pizza and had high ratings. It definitely wasn’t as good as the pizza instead NY but it satisfied me. Took a shower and resumed binging Morning Wars. Until tomorrow..
